NBA Media Power
So now that the NBA lockout is finally over teams are ready to get set to trade. Lots of teams are trying for Chris Paul or Dwight howard. Now what is being said is that both players will most likely go to one team. This is almost about the same thing that happened with Lebron James last year. When Lebron James made his announcement last year the media went crazy and they even gave him his own show. Tons of brands and advertisement were not only placed but seen on that show and million of dollars were not only spent but probably made because of that. It shows how just one player can influence people and companies so much.
Now the same thing is happening but with two other players. Honestly I think it shouldn’t be allowed to happen because it’s making the NBA unfair. Only a few teams will stand a chance. Meaning that only those teams will mostlikely get the attention and advertisements because those will be the ones that everyone is watching. Those teams will have a great deal of influence even though the NBA will be the main ones getting the benefits from it not the teams.
Have we really gone into a place in society where peoples life decisions are now made into TV shows maily so that networks and companies can use them to support their own interest. We see what happened with Lebron James where he can’t go back to his home town. Many say the TV show was to blame, he went all over TV and announced that he was leaving making people alot more irrate. Hopefully the NBA has learned its lesson and won’t do the same to these players and won’t make them into their own little advertisments for them to make more and for brands to sell their products.
It’s over!
The NBA lockout is finally over. To alot of basketball fans like myself its the most exciting news we got all weekend long. Even better the first game will be on Dec. 25th right on christmas day. Alot of us were sad because its a tradition to watch the christmas day laker game while we open up our new presents. Most of us feel the same, basketball has been out way to long in my opinion. The agreement has been reached and players can now return to practice, and trade waivers have already began to be offered.
It has been the most talked about story in every sports news outlet. Not only do they finally get something else besides football to talk about, but there rating have sky rocketed. Some people on watch channels like espn to get news on basketball. Now those channels have gotten their ratings back from those viewers.
The most important aspect i would say would be the advertisements. Going into december we are suppose to be about 2 months into the season already. Alot of games have been skipped. Advertisements that have partnerships with the NBA have lost out on alot of show time and audiences due to the NBA lockout being in effect. Now with the season back in it helps everyone that is affiliated with the NBA. The channels that broadcast on will get ratings, fans will get the sport we love, advertisements will be shown, and the players and coaches have jobs again. Seein basketball nearly not take place this year let me see just how important one event or show can be to the media.
UC Davis Riots
So the big story this week is the protest at UC Davis. A video uploaded on youtube showing the officers abusing protesters. During their sit in officers on the scene decided to start pepper spraing the protesters. The big deal about this was that it was a peaceful protest and there was no threat yet the officers still decided to take measure to the extreme and begin to pepper spray the students. None of the students reacted which is the smart thing to do because without a reaction it really victomizes them and makes the officers look real bad. MAybe the officers were just trying to make an example out of that group but they paid for it.
With the way media is today we can see how every little move has to be well thought out or you end up on the internet and all over the news. There was a time where people didnt have to watch what they did as much. Im sure plenty of officers got away with tons of things but now that wont fly. With pretty much everyone having access to a way to record a moment at any time every move you make is key. Before people needed to get lucky and just so happen to have a video camera while some thing bad was happening but now people have tools to record at all times.
The way its recorded makes it so that not only can we see what really happened localy but people around the world get to see it aswell. We see it with the egypt riots, where here in America we can see every aspect of it without having to be there. The pepper spray video has almost a million views and that only from one uploader imagine from all of them. Thats how crazy our media has become.
Media affecting athletes
This topic came to my head because of a espn headliner i just saw. The headline was aboit a quarter back named Tim Tebow. Tebow is the quarterback for the Denver Broncos, in the past game the Broncos were able to win with Tebow only completing 2 passes in the entire game. The media went crazy and called him the worst quarterback ever and said he was an insult to quarterbacks and an embarrasement to the NFL. Which got me thinking heres a player that has worked very hard and trained his whole life just to be looked at in this way. He really is a good quarterback and people are missing the most important fact the Broncos WON!!
i feel like the media has too much influence in todays society. Where do they get the right to challenge other peoples skils and talents. The saddest part is this is workin because people have been commenting all over the internet that he really is he worst quarterback. And its not true he got his team the W and thats all that matters. The same thing happened with Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez when he was on the front cover of every fashion magazine. People started saying he wasnt a real quarterback and he was just a pretty boy. And now the Jets have become. a really good team. I feel like the media likes to protray athletes negatively but i domt think its right because it really does affect these peoples careers. What a person does outside of his sport shouldnt affect what he does in a game but the media loves to eat it up and takes its chance to make them look bad to gain a bigger profit.
Media Trial
So todays latest news story is about the coach at Penn State being fired. The story is that his defensive coach was sexually abusing young kids at their football camp. The head coach at Penn State knew what was takin place and reported to the president then left it alone. By telling the president the coach was performing his obligated coach duties but to many that wasnt enough. He was fired after serving about 60 years with the school and helping to build its reputation. Kids were outraged and began to cause chaos around the school. But do these students have a right without knowing the whole story.
The media outlook behind this is that media is pretty much the trial now a days for celebrities and athletes. We pretty nuch get the whole story and place our verdict before anything goes to trial. Its kind of a sad thing but its how things are. With the way news flows today we hear the story from all dofferent sources and then choose to believe whatever we decide to believe. People never hear the full story or get evidence for the story and opinions are placed all over the news. I feel like the coach only got fired because it turned into such a big deal and the board felt obligated to show the public this wont be tolerated. Who knows what would have happened had we not had this technology and the media wouldnt have turned it into such a big deal.
Kim K.
Alright well aperrantly the hottest news right now is Kim Kardashian is getting a divorce. I don’t really consider this breaking news because I think we all pretty much knew this was going to happen. So Kim Kardashian after only a few days of marrige is now getting a divorce. Seeing how they reacted on there show everyone knew it wouldnt last long. The key phrase being used right now maybe not by media outlets but by people is “you cant turn a hoe into a house wife.” Its a line that makes Kim kardashian look really bad and it will just hurt her image alot. Facebook is a big help to that phrase.
The media is eating this up. When people get a divorce its suppose to be a private thing and your suppose to leave people alone and maybe let them grieve. But this on is different just because its Kim kardashian. it all over the news and the internet. News outlets are going crazy and want all the first details so that they can display them first and get all the viewers. Also from what I heard E news will have the first stories because Kim kardashian is associated with them, lucky for them this will boost their ratings. Its big news and everyone is waiting to laugh so E news being the first one and having exclusive information will allow them to market that and be at the top for atleast a while. its crazy to me how someones terrible news can turn into great news for media outlets. They make profits off of others peoples tragic events in their personal life. I guess you can say she asked for it tho. As predictable as this was she had to know when it happened it would get big. Media outlts pray for things like this to happen, because it makes people tune in more. Its sad to see that weve reach the day where the media waits for days like this to boost thier ratings instead of focusing on whats really important. Ending the war or poverty should boost ratings not this.
Earthquake!
Before I start talking about the media I want to talk about the earthquake that just happened. Turkey just experienced its biggest earthquake since 1999. The earthuake was a 7.2 on the scale. It left turkey in a wreck. Seeing the pictures online yo can tell there going to be in bad shape for a while. So far the count is 279 lives have been taken but there are many more people un accounted for. One of their most famous buildings in turkey collapsed and really did the most damaged in Turkey.
The media plays a big role in this. I love this example because it shows just how far we’ve come. I would have never heard of this earthquake had it not been for my internet. It shows how important the technilogy we have is because it allows us to see whats going on around the world. And thats just not for me obviously I’m sure millions of people also heard of the earthquake due to technology that otherwise wouldnt have known. It not only works for us to find out what’s happening but also how to help. The news gets around so fast that people from other countries have already sent help to help them out. Without the aid of technology some might still not know what happened or find out too late and be slow to send out help and it might be too late. We are also able to combine our technology to help the efforts. With a simple txt message from our phone we are able to donate and help out any way we can. And although we’re using this example this is true for any major disaster like japan or new orleans.
